Interior Design Trends 2023: Take Care!

“Design is committed this year to preserve the beauty of living on earth”,

says Caroline Biros, Communications Officer: Maison&Objet Fair 2023, France

Take Care!

For its January edition, the Maison & Objet Paris fair invites us to get involved, under the caption of conscious and engaged kindness. The importance of taking care of yourself; your mental and physical health; others; the planet; one’s expert skills. Whatever design, product, or space we are going to interact with will essentially be meaningful to connect with, to deliver something beyond just an item or a room. This reflects the importance of what buyers place on “the origins of products, the manufacturing methods, and the commitments of companies” through the dedication top reserving the beauty of living on earth.

Creating purposeful homes is becoming more of a need for homeowners. The design of the multifunction home is obvious – bridging the gap and incorporating everyday activities, as well as entertainment, and exercise into a single dedicated space. We will see an increase in the number of luxe movie and game rooms, fitness, and saunas within homes. Living rooms will become multi-purpose spaces. The need for “space purpose” is seen in dedicated, designer, and functional laundry and mudrooms.

2023 is all about sustainability, functionality, and purpose.

Trends

One top trend for 2023 is sustainability. Earth-friendly methods and materials will grow in admiration from objets d’art to our homes and our gardens. With a renewed interest in sustainable, natural, and ethical materials, working with plastic waste and recycled materials will grow in popularity. Handmade artisan goods indicate the move towards design with global impact. Think paper-Mâché, – it is lightweight, reasonably affordable, and does not require much energy consumption. Think vases, mirror frames, and table lamps.

Ladies – curves are in!

Arcs and round shapes, curved sofas, tulip and egg chairs, circular rugs, oblong mirrors, and mushroom lighting all feature centre stage in 2023.

Alcoves, once only an architectural feature, are regaining momentum and are suddenly becoming corners with a purpose used as space-saving, zen nooks. This trend is spot on with the emphasis on wellness and healthy living, establishing the tone of slowing down and being mindful of ourselves and the space we are in.

Japanese traditions will continue to impact interior choice –  arranging the pieces in spaces to create balance with the natural world and to bring the outdoors inside. The practice of feng shui, wabi-sabi, and ikigai, combined with indoor gardening will see continued growth. Wilder and larger-scale indoor plants, as well as terraces or gardens incorporated into fixed structures, will be key features of design.

The return of the roaring ’20s is on trend, embodying rich colours, bold geometry, and decadent detail work. Having reached the height of its popularity in the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s, the style remains to bring in glamour, luxury, and order with symmetrical designs in boisterous shapes.

We are moving away from stark minimalism towards a more expressive approach to interiors by creating spaces built around valuable works of art or collectibles and incorporating more layers. Soft furnishings remain key and mixed and matched scatter cushions are a popular bedding trend in 2023. Pay attention to mixing various sizes, shapes, and styles of cushions to create an “insta-worthy pillowscape”.

Art Deco, short for Arts Décoratifs, returns!

Wallpaper has been renewed and is not only used as wall coverings but incorporates alternative uses such as borders for windows, doors, and alcoves. Have a look at our previous blog on the Wallpaper Revival.

Materials

Showcasing the natural qualities of materials, stripped of all synthetics. Organic shapes and materials are becoming more popular, and being dubbed “hyper-texturality”. A stronger focus on exaggerated veins and textures in marble, stone, and wood as well as high-contrast and high-pattern grains are seeing more interest. Natural materials such as marble, rattan, wicker, and cane – locally sourced are all clear winners.

What does this mean for aesthetics? A more unique and inimitable piece. Raw, yet defined by quality. Artists with vision will make us see exquisite crafts and art featuring strong natural, clean lines. The importance of sourcing and reusing what already exists is continuing. Using antiques mixed with contemporary touches co-exists perfectly. Pinterest calls it the “hipstoric home trend”. Boomers and Gen Z are searching for new ways to honour vintage and inherited pieces in their homes. Comfort is the key focus here – reassurance, familiarity, a feel-good aspect like bringing up a smile when seeing or touching it.

Colours

The post-pandemic emotional state creates a more practical need to invest in versatile and comforting neutrals with natural stone hues. The warm 90s neutrals return, symbolising optimism and peace. Bring on brown, beige, and cream, wrapping rooms in warmth and a sense of well-being.
Neutral stone hues, warm beige, dark chocolate brown, pistachio, mushroom grey, rust, silver, gold, honeyed, and warm summery tones, jade, hybrid blue-green, and rich blues (water tones). Lavender and magenta pink, green and orange (combined), deep red and paprika, sunlit yellows with black accents, and baby pinks, paired with teal greens.

Which colour of furniture is in for 2023? Goodbye, grey!
Warm neutral paint and upholstery colours are enjoying favour over greys, with shades like tan, taupe, ivory, and beige (even brown) rising in popularity! “People have been drawn to nature-inspired and earthy tones the past couple of years, and this will continue into 2023 and beyond,” says Sue Wadden, Director of Colour Marketing at Sherwin-Williams. “Greens, blues, and browns can make any space feel safe, calming, and grounded, yet energised.”
